Wowwwwww O______O
I really like this! The style and color are really enjoyable. ^^
When I saw this as your featured deviation, I crossed my fingers and hoped that this was your actual work, and not just a photograph of someone elses (I often get disappointed in that way).
I can see this on the wall at a 'Sticky Fingers' restaurant. Or a gallery in New Orleans. :D

Thanks, I did a series of blues and jazz paintings (this being one of them) for a gallery in Southern California a few years ago. One of these days I'm going to get off my lazy ass and start painting again.

I'm lazy about painting most of the time... it requires so much more setup and space than drawing, waiting for the paint to dry, more expensive materials- you get the idea!

I'm not a big fan of pastel drawings, but i'd be an idiot to not see skill when looking at the picture.
it wouldn't take too much imagination to see this hanging in a museum somewhere.

Yea, but I can't remember who. It's not Robert Johnson, which is what most people think.

According to me, it's Missisipi John Hurt

It doesn't really matter though. The picture is great.

And thanks for letting me know who it is. I just googled the name and you're correct, and I found a few more photos of him that have given me inspiration. :)

I'm glad that I could help.
Can't wait to see your next works.

I bet that you would also find a great deal of inspiration in his music.
Try listening to "Live at Oberlin College" album.
It's one of my all-time favourites :)

wow, a real artist with real talent. even on deviantart, a rare breed.
i was in the highschool jazz band
and i developed a real appreciation for jazz and blue musicians.
so for me, this is both skillful and strikes my interest.

I've always loved jazz and blues and usually listen to Miles Davis or some other old school musician while I work.
So what instrument do you play?

i was the lead tenor saxophonist. i've been playing it for 6 years now, but i've only been playing jazz for 3. it's by far the best style of music i have ever played, and i didn't really like it beforehand. actually, i still think a lot of jazz can be very boring, but the right jazz songs are some of the best songs. dizzy gillespie is what i listen to mostly, and i saw gordon goodwin's big phat band last year. it was awesome. jazz from the past could be so inventive. i wish i could have been around when it started getting big.

I totally agree that alot of it is boring (especially the new age jazz) but then you listen to a musician like Miles, Coltrane or Dizzy and it's just beautiful and moody.

I used to listen to Jazz and Blues all the time when I painted and then I decided to attempt to paint Louis Armstrong and it came out surprisingly well and everything just flowed without having to think about it, so I just continued to paint musicians that I admired.

Are you planning on making a career of playing the sax?

oh yeah, classic jazz is just so....full of life, you know? live jazz recordings from the jazz era are the best because you can totally feel the music, and playing it rocked too because sitting inside of a band playing such a moving piece is exhilerating (as long as we didn't screw up).

i don't plan on making it a career, but i do intend to buy my own one day and hopefully create a lab band or something just to experiment with new things and just enjoy playing music with others. i never owned one even though i played for six years and got some private lessons and everything. i rented mine from my school for 40 dollars a year, including summers and all breaks and everything. plus i was poor as hell, so this was good for me.

do you intend to make a career with your artistic talent?

That's cool. My sister planned on being a concert painist, but the amount of practice and dedication overwhelmed her after her first year in music school and she's now doing graphic design. She still enjoys playing though which is the important part.

All of the "jazz and blues" paintings I have in my gallery I've sold ( I was in a gallery in the L.A. Area for about a year), but I haven't really made a career of it. It's a pretty competetive business (and it is definitely a business). I work as a freelance web designer and developer and try to continue painting with the hopes of some day being able to support myself soley on painting, but I'm not holding my breath lol.

wow. i wish i had that skill. once i had a poem published, but all the poems in the book were totally horrible, so i'm pretty sure it was a scam. atleast you know you're actually talented, haha.
i wanted to go into graphic/web design for a long time...i designed friends' and local bands' websites. i used to do it on my freetime just for fun, but then when school started getting more intense (with busywork) i had to give it up because i would spend 8 hours a day on the computer once i started, and i wouldn't be able to stop. so my grades were dropping. but now i can proudly say i got As in all these classes where i learned absolutely nothing, so i'm glad i stopped having fun in order to do so (resentful sarcasm).

i don't know what kind of talent is in the LA area, but i really love your work and hope you can make it into a career someday.

thanks. to be honest i question my talent almost every day. there are some incredibly talented artist's in my area, as i'm sure there are everywhere and the one thing i've learned is that it's as much about drive ( or more so) as it is about natural ability. if you find something you really enjoy doing (poetry), stick with it no matter what and eventually you will succeed. it may not be exactly what you set out to do but it will hopefully be enjoyable and you can make a decent living at it. getting a's is impressive even if it isn't as rewarding as doing something you have a passion for, it will eventually open doors for you (unfortunately i learned this the hard way).

BTW I read some of your poetry and thought it was pretty good. I hope your taking some writing classes and persuing it.

anyaway i've been up to long (i need some sleep bad) and am rambling. good luck!! :)
